The end of another season is fast approaching. I hope that it has been an enjoyable one for you and your lottery, as the summer tends to be a very busy time, with player engagement opportunities, state fairs, festivals, and more. One thing that made my summer extra special this year was NASPL’s Professional Development Seminar (PDS) held in Louisville, Ky., during the last week of July.
I struggle to find the words to describe the event, which set an all-time record for attendance at a PDS. Mary Harville and her stellar team at the Kentucky Lottery rolled out the red carpet for NASPL delegates. Their southern hospitality and Kentucky pride carried us through the week. The planning committee curated an engaging agenda that kept everyone informed, allowed for collaboration and the sharing of ideas, and included plenty of networking opportunities – all while navigating the flow of activity at a pace that wasn’t overwhelming. We also celebrated the 2025 group of Powers Award winners and the winner of the Ott Brown Scholarship Award.
In addition to the many specialized breakout sessions, PDS also featured a lineup of keynote speakers who offered an inspiring and dynamic range of insights. Kentucky Derby winner Brian Hernandez Jr. shared how preparation and composure drive success under pressure, while executive coach Lisa Zangari encouraged leaders to embrace curiosity, collaboration and risk. Chef and television personality Damaris Phillips rounded things out with humor and creativity, showing how adaptability and innovation can spark inspiration in any field. Together, they reminded us that excellence – in any field – comes from honing your skills, fostering your vision, and following your heart.
We also had the chance to experience the world-famous Churchill Downs and enjoy a visit from the folks at the Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory.
Louisville’s great history was on full display all week, like a postcard for attendees to take away with them. The city is definitely on my destination list for a future follow-up visit.
The end of the summer also ushers in NASPL’s Annual Conference and Tradeshow, which will be held in Niagara Falls, Ontario, hosted by Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. It is NASPL’s premier event of the year and a culmination of all the work the organization has done this year. I cannot wait to travel across the border for what promises to be one of the best annual conferences we’ve had in recent years. From the NASPL advertising awards to the tradeshow showcasing our vendors, there will be no shortage of things to excite us and keep us engaged. I hope to see you there!
