Dan Miller is the definition of consistency and dependability. His work is always high quality, and he is always thinking several steps down the road.

Dan has been Washington’s Lottery public relations strategist for the past several years. He has guided them through new game launches, huge prize winners, and vaccine lottery promotion.

Washington’s Lottery thanks Dan for his terrific work, proudly nominates him for a Powers Award for his accomplishments during the Mega Millions game launch in April 2025.

In June 2024, when Washington became the lead state for the Mega Million Consortium for the first time ever, the team had to learn how to do several things. First, they now served as the lead spokesperson for Mega Millions, providing interesting information for fellow state lotteries to share about the game, the jackpot, and the winners. Second – and equally important – there would be a new game launching in the spring of 2025.

Dan and his team immediately stepped in and stepped up. The challenge was launching a new product in an environment where lotteries have to make public the intent to change the game months before it becomes available. How can you keep the public interested six months prior to the launch?

In October, Dan presented and executed the first of a two-stage press strategy. By sharing that the game was going to change, developing compelling talking points, and pushing the message to every media outlet, the team garnered over 2,000 media stories – the majority of them positive. Through all of the media interest, Dan kept communication directors from across the country organized and informed. He provided regular updates to FAQs and talking points based on interview questions. No one ever went into an interview unprepared.

Then in March, the bigger challenge was set before Dan: How could we generate the same level of buzz that we did in October? Dan had intentionally reserved some tasty details from the media push in October. He also developed a strategy to do a press release announcing the new game, then a second one after the first draw to compare the current and old game, in order to show the value.

Dan and his team put together a press package that was so well developed that it was picked up 2,500 times with 99%+ positive coverage. In many cases, the media utilized the information provided to create stories that didn’t require an interview, thus increasing the number of stories that were produced.

While Washington’s Lottery is formally the nominating state, the Mega Millions Consortium also thanks Dan for his amazing work and would like to recognize him with a  2025 Powers Award.
