CONCORD, Ohio (July 14, 2025) – Today marks the start of the seventh National Lottery Week, and the North American Association of State and Provincial Lotteries (NASPL) – the industry’s trade association – is proud to join lotteries and industry partners across the U.S. and Canada in celebrating the tremendous positive impact lotteries have in the communities they serve.

Lotteries were established to generate funding for good causes, and they continue to fulfill that mission every day. From education and college scholarships to environmental conservation, senior programs, economic development, tourism, local infrastructure, and more, lotteries support initiatives that improve lives and strengthen communities.

But the impact goes far beyond revenue. Lotteries support hundreds of thousands of retail businesses by driving in-store traffic and offering commission-based income. The industry is also responsible for tens of thousands of jobs, both directly and indirectly, through public operations and private sector partnerships.

Player health and safety remain a top priority. Lotteries actively promote responsible gaming through ongoing education, retailer training, and collaboration with advocacy groups to ensure players have the tools they need to play responsibly.

In addition to their economic and social contributions, lotteries are also deeply engaged in local charitable work, often sponsoring community events, food drives, environmental cleanups, and other initiatives that give back to the places where they operate. And, of course, lotteries provide millions of players with moments of fun and excitement – and for some, life-changing wins.

Lottery Week was introduced as a way to spotlight these contributions. “Lottery Week is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the vital role lotteries play in communities across North America,” said NASPL Executive Director David Gale. “In fiscal year 2024, U.S. lotteries generated more than $31 billion for public programs and services. These are real dollars making a real difference – and that’s worth celebrating.”

Lottery Week grew from a grassroots initiative launched by the Massachusetts Lottery in 2018, when it declared July 17 as National Lottery Day to promote the lottery’s ongoing contributions to local aid. Since then, it has evolved into a full week of recognition, awareness, and celebration across North America.
