Mike Smith has witnessed countless changes and challenges during his impressive 30-plus years in the lottery industry. However, the past year brought an unprecedented twist to his extensive career. He found himself at the helm for the first time, leading the onboarding of four new department directors within one year, all while negotiating new contracts with two major lottery vendors. His resilience in navigating these complexities has not only showcased his leadership skills but also solidified his reputation in an ever-evolving industry.

Unexpected simultaneous resignations by three directors at the Arkansas Scholarship Lottery could have irreparably damaged the agency. But Mike stepped up to fill the void and keep the ship afloat. Drawing on his longtime experience in the industry, and with the support of the three remaining directors, he navigated the tumultuous waters, ensuring the lottery didn’t just survive but thrived amid uncertainty during this time.

Among the three new directors, followed by a fourth director later in the year, their combined years in the lottery industry were zero. Mike provided valuable expertise and insight, demonstrating patience, encouragement, and a sense of humor while working with each new director. The Lottery sustained a solid year through his extraordinary efforts, with sales exceeding the forecasted budget by 3%.

This level of dedication is standard for Mike Smith. After years of success in the lottery industry in New York, he learned about a brand-new lottery start-up and in 2009, he decided to venture to Arkansas to be involved. Developing a new lottery is an extraordinary endeavor, and the long, intense hours take a toll on a person. Yet, Mike and a revolving team of professionals from diverse backgrounds embraced the challenge. In an impressive feat, they brought the Arkansas Scholarship Lottery to life in less than six months. Their hard work and passion not only marked a significant milestone in Mike’s career but also promised new opportunities for the people of Arkansas.

Mike has earned a stellar reputation in the gaming industry, revered and recognized by his peers. He not only talks the talk but also walks the walk. He consistently keeps up with what is happening in gaming and shares his knowledge unselfishly.

His role at the Arkansas Scholarship Lottery is as unique as his title, Gaming Director. He has been the rudder that steered the lottery from its inception and continues to make everything happen the right way. In addition to the Gaming/Product division, he provides guidance and direction throughout the organization. All divisions have relied heavily on Mike through the years.
