Virginia Lottery invites young artists to celebrate educators through the 10th annual Thank a Teacher Art Contest

RICHMOND, Va. (October 19, 2026) – Ask any teacher, and they will likely have a collection of student artwork they've saved through the years because those colorful creations represent something special: appreciation, connection, and the impact they make every day. The Virginia Lottery and The Supply Room are inviting Virginia students to turn their gratitude into art as they launch the 10th Annual Thank a Teacher Art Contest, open October 19 through November 23, 2026.

The contest encourages K-12 public school students across the Commonwealth to create original artwork that celebrates the teachers who inspire, motivate, and help them grow. One student winner will be selected from each school level: elementary, middle, and high school.

Each winning student will receive a $200 gift card, and the art department at each school will receive a $2,000 credit from The Supply Room to purchase much-needed classroom and art supplies. The three winning designs will be featured on official Thank a Teacher thank-you notes distributed throughout Virginia during Teacher Appreciation Week in May 2027.

Complete contest rules, entry requirements, and submission information are available at ThankATeacherVA.com.

“We all remember a teacher who made a difference in our lives,” said Kevin Hall, executive director of the Virginia Lottery. “This contest gives students a chance to celebrate those special teachers in their own creative way, and we’re excited to see the stories and gratitude they bring to life through their artwork.”

The 2026 Thank a Teacher Art Contest showcased exceptional talent from students across Virginia. Last year's winners included:

Their artwork was featured on over 225,000 Thank a Teacher thank-you notes distributed to educators statewide during Teacher Appreciation Week.

Virginia K-12 public school students may submit original artwork that expresses appreciation for the teachers who have made a positive impact in their lives. Entries will be accepted from October 19 through November 23, 2026.

Even if you're not entering the contest, you can still be part of the celebration. Virginians can visit ThankATeacherVA.com to pre-order free 2027 Thank a Teacher thank-you notes and get ready to send words of encouragement, appreciation, and thanks to the educators who inspire students every day.
