growth.
As Director of Technology at the Kentucky Lottery, Ram Thilakaramanujam exemplifies this caliber of leadership.
Ram played a pivotal role in the Lottery’s comprehensive six-year technology modernization initiative to update the iLottery platform, central gaming system, and all equipment at retail, aptly named “Odyssey,” inspired by the epic journey described in Homer’s classic. Throughout this multiyear effort, Ram served as the Lottery’s guiding force – steady, insightful,
and unwavering in commitment.
Thanks to Ram and his team, the Lottery successfully completed the Odyssey project. And true to the spirit of the classic tale known for its complexity and challenges, this journey brought its share of obstacles, decisive turning points, and ultimately, significant victories.
Ram was engaged throughout the project from technology evaluation through post-implementation support, ensuring a smooth replacement of the retail and iLottery channels with minimal disruption. He helped oversee the integration of Connected Play features that support mobile cashing of retail tickets into an existing iLottery account as well as the ability to pay for retail purchases with iLottery account funds.
Ram also partnered with the Lottery’s finance team to establish the necessary financial and reporting controls for these new capabilities. As the project’s key solution architect, he delivered innovative, player-focused functionality while upholding essential performance, scalability, reliability, and integrity standards.
Terminal-Generated Games Manager Monica Bischoff said Ram took the time to explain the technical aspects of the project to her and her team, and that Ram “always does the right thing for our players and retailers.”
Ram’s impact extends far beyond Odyssey. Over 25 years with the Kentucky Lottery, he has overseen key elements of software development and quality assurance, ensuring strong alignment across internal systems and vendor technologies.
Eastern Regional Sales Manager Michael Hayden praised Ram for helping fix an issue with a retailer. “Ram turned what could have been a catastrophe into nothing more than a flip of a switch. We are so blessed to have Ram’s genius working to help us.”
For these and many other leadership examples, Ram is outstanding representative for the Kentucky Lottery of the integrity and commitment behind the Edward J. Powers Award.
