VLT Regulation Manager
Ohio Lottery Commission
Matt Clever is deserving of this year’s Powers Award for going above and beyond, by volunteering to lead several projects along with his regular duties.
Throughout his tenure at the Ohio Lottery, Matt has served on the Racino/VLT Regulation team. This department ensures that the seven racinos are in compliance with all Ohio laws and regulations and operates the video lottery terminal games with the utmost integrity. This portion of the Ohio Lottery business accounted for approximately $450 million in profit to the state via the Lottery Profits Education Fund last fiscal year.
This past year, Matt has been instrumental in assisting with the Ohio Lottery’s Responsible Gambling and Unattended Minors initiatives at the racinos. In addition to working with the internal responsible gambling department to implement the new initiative, Matt worked collaboratively with other state agencies to improve regulatory practices by the Ohio Lottery. This work allows the Lottery to ensure that all seven racinos are monitoring for unattended minors regularly – especially in the parking lots and land surrounding the properties – thereby improving the safety of all guests.
Additionally, Matt is always a team player in his work. He has thoroughly researched gaming trends to improve regulatory compliance procedures. He contributes at department meetings and makes recommendations that help team members decrease redundancy and inefficiency in reporting proposals. He has also taken on the responsibility of overseeing the operations of multiple racino locations simultaneously and assisted a new employee in becoming acclimated to their position.
