Let’s Talk About How Lotteries Build North America

During my term as NASPL President, I hope to emphasize that in a crowded and competitive gaming and entertainment landscape, lotteries are the people’s business.

Many of our lottery organizations were created with the approval of the voters, and all of us function within the public policy environment.

However, as public entities we are sometimes at a disadvantage when it comes to capturing the attention of media and policymakers when the gaming landscape is being considered.

So, let’s focus on what we do best. We generate profits – in the 25% range – that go right back into programs and projects that enrich communities and improve lives. We take responsible gaming seriously and hold ourselves to high standards of social responsibility. Our business partners around the world keep things running, providing quality products and meaningful jobs. And our quarter-million retailers show up every day with a smile, serving their communities one customer at a time.

Through a combination of news releases, social media, structured interviews, media events and panel presentations, NASPL can help tell the story of the tremendous public good that lotteries provide across the continent.

Powerball group chair Matt Strawn from the Iowa Lottery hosted me in Des Moines in October for a day of media and key retail visits. We talked about the impact of jackpots and the work of lotteries supporting beneficiary programs, and the role retailers play in our offerings.

In the months ahead, we’ll continue expanding our outreach through legislative and executive public-policy groups, industry and academic conferences, and our regional lottery partners. Let’s work together to help players and nonplayers, retailers, beneficiaries, and policymakers understand the real value lotteries bring to their communities.
