Mass Lottery App Continues to Make Measurable Environmental Impact

DORCHESTER, Mass. (April 22, 2024) As we celebrate Earth Day, the Massachusetts State Lottery app continues to make a measurable impact on the environment. Since the launch of a mobile cashing feature in September of 2021, carbon emissions and paper usage related to traditional in-person prize claims have been reduced, while offering convenience and cost savings to customers in the process.

With over 104,000 prize claims fulfilled through the app, the elimination of vehicle trips to Lottery claim centers for these transactions has preserved an estimated 208,000 gallons of gas, resulting in an estimated carbon emissions reduction of over 4 million pounds. Lottery winners have claimed over $139 million in prizes through mobile claims, saving an estimated $759,000 in gasoline costs. Processing these claims electronically has also reduced the Lottery’s production of paper checks.

“The Lottery’s mobile cashing app has been a great accommodation for our players. And, it has proven to have a positive impact on our environment too,” said State Treasurer Deborah B. Goldberg, Chair of the Massachusetts State Lottery Commission. “These benefits grew considerably over the last two years as more customers have taken advantage of this convenience, that also provides them with fuel cost savings.”

“Earth Day is a great occasion to bring awareness to the variety of ways in which businesses can promote environmental sustainability. We thank our customers for their role in preserving the environment by utilizing this technology.”

In the last 12 months, over 48,000 claims have been processed, preserving an estimated 96,000 gallons of gas and reducing carbon emissions by an estimated 1.8 million pounds. Customers saved an estimated $326,000 in gasoline costs in this span.

“Earth Day is a great occasion to bring awareness to the variety of ways in which businesses can promote environmental sustainability,” said Mark William Bracken, Executive Director of the Mass Lottery. “We thank our customers for their role in preserving the environment by utilizing this technology.”

The continuing environmental impact of mobile cashing is being tracked here.

The mobile cashing feature gives customers the ability to claim prizes of $601 to $5,000 securely through the Mass Lottery app and receive their winnings electronically to their bank account. Prior to the introduction of this feature, these prize claims had to be processed at one of six Lottery claim centers or submitted by mail.

The Mass Lottery app also allows registered users to scan tickets to see if they are winners and to enter non-winning tickets into Second Chance Drawings. Over 327,000 users have registered. The Mass Lottery app is available for both Android and iOS devices.
